The Tequila Transparency War: Who Controls the Truth? (Part II)
Breaking down the 1% rule, the CRT lawsuit, and what’s really inside your tequila bottle.
Hola, Agave Enthusiasts!
Last week’s Agave Talks sparked an incredible discussion. The Tequila transparency debate brought out strong opinions, deep insights, and some much-needed clarifications.
So today, we continue. What is really allowed in Tequila? What does the law say? How do different spirits handle additives? Most importantly, let’s put all the facts on the table so you can form your own opinion.
And if you want to experience agave spirits made the traditional way—no shortcuts, no additives, just fully matured Blue Agave—La Leyenda Mezcal is for you.
The 1% Rule: What’s Really Allowed in Tequila?
There is a widespread belief that Tequila allows up to 1% of additives by volume. But this is only partially true.
✅ The 1% rule applies only to abocantes, which are legally classified as ingredients, not additives. These include:
✔️ Caramel coloring
✔️ Oak extract
✔️ Glycerin
✔️ Sugar syrup
💡 Did you know? Abocantes can naturally develop during aging, making it difficult to scientifically prove whether they were added or formed naturally.
What About Blanco Tequilas?
🚫 Blanco Tequila cannot contain abocantes.
📉 If anything is added, it must be labeled as Joven, Oro, or Gold.
🔬 Blancos have stricter dry extract limits than aged Tequilas, meaning even barrel-rested Blancos have minimal room for modification.
This is one of the reasons La Leyenda Mezcal refuses to cut corners. We don’t need additives or abocantes—just fully mature agave, carefully distilled for purity.

Are Some Blancos Using Undeclared Enhancements?
Some Blanco Tequilas taste smoother, softer, or slightly sweet, leading to speculation that glycerin or other enhancers might be used.
But since Blancos cannot legally contain abocantes, how is this happening?
Techniques Used for "Smoother" Blancos:
🔹 Diffuser Processing – An industrial method that extracts starches from raw agave and converts them using acid and enzymes instead of roasting.
🔹 Extended Resting – Some Blancos are rested in stainless steel or barrels, allowing oxidation to mellow out harsh notes.
🔹 Oxygenation Techniques – Micro-oxygenation can reduce alcohol burn and make Tequila feel softer on the palate.
🔹 Selective Water Use – Some distilleries adjust the water’s mineral content to alter mouthfeel.
This is why many agave enthusiasts turn to Mezcal as an alternative—where rules around additives are stricter, and full transparency is still valued.

Why Do Some 100% Agave Tequilas Have an Overpowering Floral or Sweet Aroma?
Ever opened a bottle of 100% Blue Agave Tequila and noticed an intense floral, vanilla, or even bubblegum-like aroma?
If Tequila is supposed to be natural, why do some smell and taste artificially sweet?
🔥 Reasons Some Tequilas Taste "Enhanced":
1️⃣ Yeast Manipulation – Some brands use specialized yeast strains that create exaggerated fruity or floral aromas.
2️⃣ Diffuser Methods – Skipping traditional cooking can result in a more neutral, artificial sweetness.
3️⃣ Over-Filtration & Oxygenation – Heavy filtration (Cristalino styles) can strip agave character, leading to compensation with flavor-boosting techniques.
This is why La Leyenda Mezcal sticks to tradition—using slow-cooked, full-term agave without over-processing or filtration tricks.

Additive-Free Debate: Transparency vs. Misinformation
The additive-free movement started with good intentions—consumers deserve to know what they’re drinking. But along the way, misinformation has clouded the conversation.
🔹 Influencers have compared Tequila additives to cleaning chemicals, creating a fear-based narrative that oversimplifies the real issue.
🔹 A whiskey brand even went viral criticizing Tequila, ignoring the fact that whiskey itself allows caramel coloring and other flavoring agents.
🔹 Some Mezcal brands have capitalized on the debate, despite loopholes in their own regulations that allow certain modifications.
This has led to a perception war. Instead of promoting real transparency, some messaging has misled consumers into believing that non-certified Tequilas are automatically bad—even when they follow official regulations.
At La Leyenda Mezcal, we believe education is the best way forward—no misleading narratives, just the facts.

Final Thoughts: What Should Happen Next?
1️⃣ The CRT should improve consumer education. If people are confused, the industry hasn’t communicated clearly enough.
2️⃣ The term "additive-free" needs legal clarity. Should it be officially regulated, or should a new term be created?
3️⃣ Consumers must decide what matters most. Is a 1% abocante allowance a big deal, or do agave quality and production methods matter more?
At La Leyenda Mezcal, we let our agave speak for itself.
✅ 100% Blue Agave, fully matured
✅ No additives, no shortcuts
✅ Authentic craftsmanship
